From the Latin silvanus, "god of the forest".
Sylvanus was one of the nicknames of the Roman god Mars. Saint Sylvain was a bishop of Gaza, Palestine, during the reign of Emperor Diocletian in the fourth century. He was condemned to the mines before suffering martyrdom.
